Types of Sea Freight

Container Ship

Bulk Carrier

This type of ship carries unpacked bulk goods and usually in large quantities and volumes of single commodity goods such as coal, building materials, sand, crushed stones, grain, fertilizers, ore, etc. They are made with a single and characterized by a high dead-weight and tonnage and slow speed. Tankers

These are the most common ships that haul oil. They are used to transport liquids (such as oil, water, vegetable oil, wine, petroleum products and different chemicals) in bulk. Tankers can come in different sizes and they account for half of all sea freight transport.

RORO (Roll On-Roll Off)

This is another type of freight shipping or cargo vessel that has horizontal loading of wheelbase vehicles through stern ramps. It is used to transport different rolling materials, road haulage and passenger vehicles. It is also used to transport cars as they can be driven directly into the ship. RORO can also be used to transport containers and this can be referred to as CONRO. Cargoes like big cases, aluminium, coils can be transported using RORO as they would be loaded into trailers which are then driven into the ship and can be easily driven out at the destination.

Cargo Containers

General or Conventional Cargo

As the name implies, this refers to ships that transport loose package of all types. Conventional cargo means that the goods, whether pallets, barrels, cases, tubes, bulk, etc. are loaded and secured into the vessel without being loaded into a container. Cargoes like machines, cranes, generators or equipment too big for container can be loaded this way.
